Everyone’s hiring virtual assistants these days and I think it’s a mistake.

It’s a mistake because virtual assistant isn’t where the focus should be for successful agency owners in 2024.

I get it. Virtual assistants are cool.

They’re cheap, they take care of repetitive tasks you don’t want to do and sometimes they’ll save you some time.

But the real value in hiring overseas in places like South Africa or Eastern Europe is focusing on folks with 2-5 years of relevant experience.

This is the sweet spot where you can find focus for under $10 or $15 per hour while replacing folks who would cost $30-$50 per hour in the United States.

(Do the math yourself. I’m not joking around here.)

The Context 

I spent the last month hosting recruiting events all of Eastern Europe.

We would identify the top talent we placed with clients, then screen their networks for talent we wanted to place with our clients.

Something very, very interesting happened when we ran these events.

We realized we were wrong about talent in Eastern Europe.

The talent was actually much, much better than we had previously thought.

We met General Managers at US tech companies in places like Serbia managing 250+ people for $6k-$7k per month.

This person easily could have made $125k- $250k in the US depending on which city they worked in.

We met project managers dealing with clients like Lego at $18/hr.

We met Deloitte analysts working with Fortune 50 companies for $13/hr.

These prices are much more expensive than a $5/hr VA but that’s the magic.

The overseas talent revolution doesn’t stop at unskilled labor… it gets better the more you’re paying your US staff.

Of course, you can find good VAs for $5/hr in places like Romania or Serbia.

But the work ethic, cultural values, and experience of people with 2-5 years of experience? Absolutely unbeatable, anywhere in the world.
