Last week I talked to a 100+ person agency based in the New York Area.

They were considering hiring in Eastern Europe and South Africa but kept getting hung up on how valuable it was to have their team in person.

My solution?

Try the high-low strategy

For every person in your agency making 75k+ a year, hire one person making half their salary in Eastern Europe as their assistant.

This maximizes your talent in the US or Canada while adding new rockstars to the team.

Instead of replacing your in-person team, give them super powers by hiring someone to help them accomplish 2x, 4x or even 10x what they would on their own.

People you hire at $15/hr in Eastern Europe or South Africa aren’t just assistants.

They’re a trained industry professional. Here’s a look at what someone you could hire as
an “assistant” might look like. This person will:

  • Have 2-5 years relevant experience

  • A 4 year college degree

  • Professional- level English

  • Flexibility to accommodate your time zone (if you want, sometimes it’s better to just have work going around the clock)

  • Industry connections your existing staff may not have

  • Be thrilled to be making $15/hr

  • Insane work ethic

But what about legal?

Some agencies are (wisely) concerned about the legality of hiring a distributed team. While you should contact a licensed legal professional for your specific case, here are a few guidelines. It’s probably easier than you think.

Independent contractor laws are much looser in the US. Most countries in Eastern Europe allow you to hire full-time folks without the compliance of hiring them as an employee as long as you pay them enough to cover taxes.

If you’re particularly concerned about it, you can use an Employer of Record service like Go Carpathian or a software EOR like Deel.
