No one wants to make a bad hire.

This probably explains why the single most frequently asked question we get from our recruiting clients is:

How do I make sure I’m making the right hire for this role?

Over 100 clients and this is still the most asked question we get.

My answer?

Have your candidates do the job you want them to do.

So many people get caught up in fancy hiring processes

  • Fancy psychographic tests

  • Trick interview questions

  • Perfectly scripted role plays

  • Puzzles designed to sus out a candidate's “grit” (thanks Angela Duckworth)

But the truth is, 80% of running a good hiring process is putting your candidates in situations that reflect the real-world job you want them to do.

Have your candidates do the job you want them to do.

The Context

I actually learned this trick back when I was applying for an entry-level telemarketing job.

Before the interview, I was instructed to memorize a cold-calling script and come prepared to do a cold-call role-play.

At the interview, we did the role play as anticipated, but then there was a twist.

The hiring manager pulled out his phone and we began dialing prospects right there in the interview!

This was brilliant!

If you’re hiring cold callers, why waste time on all the fluff?

Why pay for a fancy personality test, or try to figure out if they’re fibbing about their past accomplishments?

Just have them do the job you want them to do.

(I got the job btw)

How this applies to your business

Even if you’re not hiring for a cold calling role you can still benefit by having your candidates do the job you want them to do.

Hiring an executive assistant?

Have them research a project for you

Hiring a media buyer?

Give them a (fictitious or real) media buying scenario to solve

Hiring a project manager?

Have them manage a minor project to start.

At Go Carpathian, we recommend that our clients start each candidate off at a 20-hour paid trial to assess how they do in the job, before making a longer-term commitment to the candidate.

And sure, sometimes it will take some creativity to come up with a good scenario or test case for particularly unique roles.

But it’s well worth the effort to have that extra assurance that you’re making a good hire.

Stop making stupid hiring mistakes

Most agency owners will read the advice in this email and do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

And I get it.

You’re too busy.

Too stressed.

You need to hire too quickly or you just don’t have the bandwidth.

But you cannot afford to have your business run by incompetent people who don’t care about your clients.
