😠 Is this well-intention habit killing your sales & frustrating employees?

I drove over 29 hours this weekend to learn this lesson...

One of the worst things you can do as a business owner is to be “nice.”

Nice kills sales.

Nice kills employee morale.

Nice kills your business.

In our “nice” culture, we’ve been conditioned to believe that the highest good is to not offend anyone.

And sure, that might work well in some settings, but it’s absolute poison if you’re a business owner…

The Context

This weekend I drove over 29 hours to meet up with a friend on the way to Canada’s Banff National Park.

My friend runs a very successful LinkedIn ghost-writing company for busy executives.

As we sat down for dinner, we talked about some of the opportunities and challenges are businesses have and some of the lessons we’ve learned along the way.

One of the big challenges ghost-writing companies face is that people, even successful people, are afraid of bluntly stating what they believe.

They want to hide all of the beliefs and opinions and points of view behind a barrier of qualifiers, maybes, and sometimes.

Why is this a challenge for ghostwriters?

Because nice is BORING.

People don’t want to read content about how your way of doing things is “maybe”, “possibly” or “sort-of” the right way.

They want you to have a point of view.

They want you to solve their problems and help them win.

It turns out, your prospects and employees want the same thing…

Most agency owners I talk to (over 200 at this point) think it’s ridiculous how many interviews and how much time it takes to make just one good hire.

That’s why we designed the Go Carpathian hiring process to take as little as one hour of your precious time.

Check out what Matthew K. said after we helped him hire an operations director:

“Best experience I've ever had hiring someone. I fully intend to continue working with Go Carpathian for more of my hiring needs. Incredibly impressed and grateful.”

Employees Don’t Like “Nice” Bosses

A mistake I see from owners new and old is trying too hard to make their employees like them.

Don’t misunderstand me.

I’m not saying you should be a jerk or not get to know your workers on a deeper, personal level.

What I am saying is that if you’re:

  • Withholding feedback

  • Beating around the bush

  • Not firing under-performers

  • Scared to enforce standards

  • Unwilling to create processes and rules

You’re probably being too nice.

And being too nice at the expensive of creating a high-performing team, frustrates the living daylights out of good team members

“A” players crave feedback.

They don’t want to work with bad co-workers

And maybe most of all, they want clear criteria for success and failure in their roles.

They want to win.

Don’t be a jerk to people. Use common courtesy.

But also understand that people want your point of view.

They want you to lead them.

I promise you, if you start leading your team instead of just being nice to them, two things will happen very, very quickly:

1. Team members who are just doing the bare minimum will quit.
2. Your “A Players” will absolutely dominate.

How to find more “A Players”

Once you start leading your team, some people are going to quit.

That’s normal.

That’s ok.

But if you’re anything like the over 100 agency owners I’ve helped hire “A Players” in Eastern Europe, you probably don’t have the time to find & interview enough people to find your next A Player.
