I spent the last three weeks visiting 5 countries and 9 cities and meeting with close to 100 job seekers in Eastern Europe.
I met with top candidates in operations, marketing, sales, and many, many other fields.
Here’s what top job seekers really want from your company…
What the best talent really wants…
Out of all my interactions with candidates, this one thing stood out: candidates want to work for companies where they can use their critical thinking skills and where management appreciates them.
In this regard, American companies have a huge leg up.
Candidates consistently reported that native Eastern European companies do a terrible job at making them feel appreciate and rewarding employees who take initiative.
Their perception of American companies is much more positive.
Almost everyone I spoke with thought that American companies would be great places to work because management appreciates people who think critically and want to make a difference.
There’s less of an attitude of “well this is the way we’ve always done it so we’re not going to change it.”
How to win the talent wars…
This part is really, really simple. Do not mess it up.
Give the people what they want.
Build systems in your agency to acknowledge, and support, and reward your team members.
As obvious as it sounds, people want to be successful.
Your job as their boss is to help them be successful and reward them when they are.
Train your team members to come up with solutions that are actually helpful for the business.
Praise and reward them when they become successful.
Think of this: when was the last time you publicly praised a team member for something they did well?
(Pro tip: set up a #wins channel in Slack. Use it generously)
If talent believes you can help them be successful, and that you’ll reward them if they are, you’ll win the talent wars.
Sometimes it is really that simple.
