This Week’s Lean Leverage Tip:
Should I install time-tracking software on my team’s computers?

There are few things you can do to destroy employee morale like requiring them to install invasive tracking software on their personal computers.

If you provide hardware, the effects on morale will be diminished, but still significant.

The impulse to use screen tracking software usually comes from the right place.

After all, who wouldn’t want to ensure their team is being productive?

But for someone you’re supposedly trusting to help run your business, this will generally be received poorly.

Besides the effect on morale, the problem is screen tracking just isn’t that effective.

Instead of using tracking software to manage your people, use accountability.

Have people report at the end of the day what they actually got done. Combine this with clean SOPs and project management and you’ll have a much easier time making sure your team is being productive.
